The narrow listings matter more to you. The narrowest sheet sold as king leaves only a few inches at each side. That is less than most mattresses are tall, so the sheet never reaches your bottom edge. Read the inches before you trust the label.

How far does a flat sheet hang past the mattress, and how much tucks?

A standard sheet hangs a little over a foot past each side. Take away your mattress depth, and the strip left over is your tuck.

No maker publishes this figure. We worked it out from the standard sizes. The method is subtraction on published figures. Take the sheet width and subtract the mattress width. Halve the result. That is the drop past each side. Subtract your mattress depth from it, and the remainder is your tuck. Count a topper as part of the depth.

The mattress depths are examples. Your foot end usually has more cloth to spare than the sides. If you fold the top edge over a blanket, though, that fold comes out of the foot.

In our judgement, a side tuck holds well only on mattresses under about a foot deep. On taller ones, the sheet drapes rather than tucks. You may like loose sides anyway. That works fine. The Company Store rates its standard flat sheet for mattresses up to sixteen inches deep (The Company Store). By our arithmetic, its queen would fall short of the bottom edge on a bed that tall.

What flat sheet fits a mattress deeper than about a foot?

Buy by the inches. Look for a wider cut if the sides will not tuck, a longer one if only the foot pulls loose, or go up a size.

Height is why most flat sheets feel short to you. Your topper adds to it. So does a thick mattress pad. Measure the whole stack, not the mattress alone.

Retail charts rarely go past the standard king cut, but hotel suppliers do. Hotel Items lists longer king and king XL flat sheets. WebstaurantStore lists king flat sheets in several oversize cuts, some wider as well as longer.

Can one king flat sheet cover a California king or a split king?

Yes, with a catch. A California king takes a king flat sheet but runs short at the foot, and a split king may want two sheets.

A California king is narrower and longer than a king. American Textile still gives it the same flat sheet as a king. Boll & Branch does the same with its California king set.

On a California king, that sheet gives more drop at the sides and less at the foot. On a thick mattress, you keep only a narrow strip of tuck at the foot. If you are tall, you may kick that loose. A longer hotel cut fixes it for you.

A split king is a pair of twin XL mattresses. Together they make the same footprint as a standard king (bedsizes.us). Boll & Branch's split king set holds a single king flat sheet and a pair of half-width fitted sheets. So one king flat sheet covers both mattresses.

The catch is an adjustable base. Say your side rises and your partner's stays flat. A single top sheet then gets dragged toward the raised side. You can buy a pair of twin XL flat sheets instead. Each of you then keeps your own tuck when the base moves, and you can tuck and untuck without waking the other.

How do you measure a bed before you buy a flat sheet?

Measure your mattress height with the topper on, then check the listing's width and length in inches against a simple sum, not the size name.

The size name is the least reliable part of a listing. You are buying the inches. Work through these steps first.

• Measure your mattress height from seam to seam, with any topper and pad in place. Measure at a corner. The middle can read lower.
• Next, find the width your bed needs. Take the mattress width, add twice your height, then add a few inches for tuck at each side.
• Find the length you need. Take the mattress length, add your height, then add room to tuck at the foot plus any fold at the head.
• Find the listing's size and confirm which number is the width.
• If the sheet only just meets your sum, choose the next size up, because cotton can tighten after washing.
